Widely known as “Doña Elena” to readers of Spanish-language journalism and literature, Poniatowska is best known in the United States for writing “Massacre in Mexico,” in which she interviewed survivors and families of students killed in the 1968 Tlatelolco square demonstration in Mexico City.

Many novels, short stories, magazine articles and biographies later, she has acquired a reputation for challenging political corruption and the status quo in Mexico.


“She has really brought a lot of change and hope to the people of Mexico,” said NHU president David Lopez. “We want her to inspire our students, too.” Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska to speak Thursday in San Jose – San Jose Mercury News.
